Is Indonesia really halal?

Indonesia is the country with the largest Muslim population in the world (230 million). Nearly all local restaurants do not serve pork or alcohol. MUI halal certification is rapidly developing. For Muslim travelers, Indonesia is one of the easiest destinations in the world.

Can you find alcohol in Malaysia?

Yes, alcohol is available in Malaysia in supermarkets, non-halal restaurants and bars — but clearly separated from halal establishments. Malaysian Muslims do not consume it. Halal-friendly hotels do not offer it. As a Muslim traveler, you will not be confronted with it if you choose appropriate establishments.

Do you need a visa for Indonesia or Malaysia?

French citizens do not need a visa for Malaysia (90 days) or Indonesia (free Visa on Arrival, 30 days, renewable). A passport valid for 6 months and a return ticket are sufficient in both cases.

What apps to use to find halal food?

HalalTrip and Zabihah are the references. Google Maps with the search “halal restaurant” works very well in Indonesia and Malaysia. Muslim Pro also includes a map of halal restaurants.

What is the best time to travel?

For Malaysia: October to March (west coast). For Indonesia: May to October (dry season). Lombok and Bali are ideal from June to August. Ramadan is a special period — intense spiritual atmosphere but some restaurants are closed during the day.

Is Bali compatible with a halal trip?

Yes, despite its Hindu majority, Bali is home to a Muslim community (especially in the north and in neighboring Lombok). Halal restaurants exist in tourist areas (Seminyak, Ubud, Kuta). Lombok (30 minutes by fast boat) is entirely Muslim and constitutes a perfect halal base.
