Japan Halal — Muslim Friendly Travel in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto

Japan is one of the fastest-growing destinations in terms of halal tourism. A country traditionally unfamiliar with Muslim needs, Japan has made a remarkable effort since 2010 to welcome Islamic travelers — driven notably by mass tourism from Indonesia and Malaysia. The result is encouraging, even if some preparation remains necessary.

Japan’s Halal Revolution

The Japanese government has made halal tourism a national priority. The number of certified halal restaurants in Japan has grown from a few dozen in 2010 to over 5,000 establishments in 2026. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima all have areas with well-developed halal offerings.

Finding Halal Food in Japan

The HalalGourmet Japan app is the absolute reference — it lists all certified halal restaurants by prefecture. Muslim Pro also includes a halal map for Japan. Restaurants often display “halal certified” or “Muslim-friendly” signs.

Types of Halal Restaurants in Japan

• Certified halal restaurants — official certification by Japan Muslim Association (JMA)
• Muslim-friendly — no pork or alcohol, but not always certified
• Vegetarian/vegan — acceptable option in areas without halal restaurants

Tokyo — The Halal Capital

Tokyo has the most developed halal scene in Japan. Key neighborhoods:

• Shinjuku — Tokyo Muslim Center area, concentrated halal restaurants
• Asakusa — historic district with several halal restaurants near Senso-ji temple
• Akihabara — tech area with some halal restaurants for Asian tourists
• Harajuku — halal food trucks and restaurants in the tourist zone

Osaka — Halal Street Food

Osaka is Japan’s gastronomic capital. The halal scene is also well-developed, particularly in Namba and around Masjid Osaka (Ibaraki-shi). The famous Takoyaki (octopus) exists in halal version with several street vendors.

Kyoto — Between Temples and Halal

Mosques are less numerous than in Southeast Asia, but well present in major cities:
